Columbia Law School established the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) in 1997 with the support of the Ford Foundation, to advance human rights principles through assisting the development of a public interest law infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. PILI promotes the development of new institutions, primarily in the area of clinical legal education and access to justice, and supports the adoption of new legal strategies, in areas such as discrimination and freedom of association. As of March 2002, a new PILI headquarters will be established in Budapest, Hungary, under the auspices of the Columbia University - Budapest Law Center. PILI activities at Columbia University School of Law in New York City will continue to include a Public Interest Law Fellows Program for young lawyers from the region, a Summer Internship Program for Columbia Law School students and other special projects involving students and Fellows.
