SECTION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW Welcome to the home page of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law. Formerly the Section of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law, the Section was the first one created by the ABA to deal with a special branch of the law. Since 1894, it has contributed significantly to the development of our system for the protection of intellectual property rights. The Section is the world's largest intellectual property organization, having 21,670 members as of August 31, 2001. (The Section has17,629 Lawyer members, 826 Associate members, and 3,215 Law student members.)

Community Trade Mark Advisory Initiative The CTM Advisory Initiative e.V. (CTM AI) is an initiative of Munich Attorneys for promoting the knowledge of the Community Trademark. Public Interest Law Initiative Columbia Law School established the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) in 1997 with the support of the Ford Foundation, to advance human rights principles through assisting the development of a public interest law infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. PILI promotes the development of new institutions, primarily in the area of clinical legal education and access to justice, and supports the adoption of new legal strategies, in areas such as discrimination and freedom of association. As of March 2002, a new PILI headquarters will be established in Budapest, Hungary, under the auspices of the Columbia University - Budapest Law Center. PILI activities at Columbia University School of Law in New York City will continue to include a Public Interest Law Fellows Program for young lawyers from the region, a Summer Internship Program for Columbia Law School students and other special projects involving students and Fellows.

Legal Services Commission The Legal Services Commission is an executive non-departmental public body created under the Access to Justice Act 1999 to replace the Legal Aid Board. It is responsible for the development and administration of two schemes in England and Wales: The Community Legal Service, which from 1st April 2000 replaced the old civil scheme of legal aid, bringing together networks of funders (eg Local Authorities) and suppliers into partnerships to provide the widest possible access to information and advice. The Criminal Defence Service which from 2nd April 2001 replaced the old system of criminal legal aid and provides criminal services to people accused of crimes.

The Law Commission The Law Commission is the independent body set up by Parliament in 1965 (along with a similar Commission for Scotland) to keep the law of England and Wales under review and to recommend reform when it is needed. Our law is a combination of the common law - decisions of judges of the higher courts - and of statute law enacted or authorised by Parliament; sometimes those decisions and statutes may go back many centuries.

International Law Commission The International Law Commission was established by the General Assembly in 1947 to promote the progressive development of international law and its codification. The Commission, which meets annually, is composed of 34 members who are elected by the General Assembly for five year terms and who serve in their individual capacity, not as representatives of their Governments.
